Born and raised in Ohio, central Ohio to be exact, I have visited and experienced many historical locations and sites within Columbus. Since elementary school, I love to learn about the many great events within the confines of Ohio that make this great State. It seems no matter the day, whether set of an expedition to seek out such markers or just running my daily routine; it is fun when I come across a Remarkable Ohio Historical Marker.
No matter where I am headed, or my imminent plans, I stop and take notice when I see a Marker, even pulling over to read the marker and make this a photo opportunity. I enjoy reading about the event in history that warranted a Remarkable Ohio Marker to be placed here.
Recently, I was on the Ohio State University in the sports complex off Olentangy River Rd headed to the Ty Tennis Center when I noticed this marker for Woody Hayes.
Growing up in Columbus, I am a huge OSU Buckeye fan and remember watching Coach Woody Hayes during every Buckeye Football Saturday. While I didn’t understand at the time, the magnitude of his collegiate coaching was legendary; Woody Hayes was and remains a household name.
“He began coaching at Ohio State in 1951. He led the Buckeyes to 205 wins, thirteen Big Ten titles, and five national championships. Passionate and committed to victory, Hayes fielded highly disciplined teams, characterized by his trademark “three yards and a cloud of dust” running offense and staunch defense. Off the field, he stressed academic achievement and taught history during the off-season.” Click here to see more details.
The Marker is placed in front of the north entrance to the Woody Hayes (Football) Athletic Center in the heart of the OSU Sports Complex.
