With our recent trip to Holland, Michigan, we wanted to see the city and all the fun surrounding sites not just the Tulips. We decided to find a parking spot in the downtown area, and walk the city. Wow! It was such a beautiful day to explore.
We came across this free outdoor permanent exhibit of the {Wizard of} Oz Sculpture Garden. Yes, right in the heart of Downtown Holland MI. The exhibit included Seven life-sized bronze sculptures of Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, a Munchkin, the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, a Fighting Tree with Flying Monkey perched on a branch, and the Wicked Witch.
We took a trip down the Yellow Brick Road in Holland. This classic story written by American literature, Author L. Frank Baum, was inspired by his stay here in Holland. With these life sized bronze sculptures, and a living floral mosaic, there is lots to see in Centennial Park. As we followed the Yellow Brick Road, we were lead to the Herrick District Library where the landscape continues.
While the exhibit is open year round, I will say it was a gorgeous day to venture down the yellow brick road.
We had all day to enjoy the Downtown scene. We packed our lunch and had a nice picnic in the public green space of Centennial Park; and relaxed in the shade provided by the giant trees. We learned about how the Dutch in Michigan came to be and read the names or the brave men and women from Holland that served our country.
It was a lazy day in sorts that we had no where to be, just go where the wind took us. Following our walk on the Yellow Brick Road and our picnic, we took to the store fronts in Downtown Holland. It was picturesque to say the least. Plenty of parking and a shop for everyone. For the weary walkers, there are even benches through out the downtown streets to rest your feet.
We traveled to Holland Michigan for a long weekend adventure. Staying on a clean, friendly, affordable and nearby Hotel was a must for us. To read about our stay at the Holiday Inn Express, click here.
