06.14.2018 Favorite Photo Friday ™
06.14.2018 || Favorite Photo Friday ™ I choose this week’s Favorite Photo Friday image for many reasons, one being that my memories of visiting the Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona continues to resonate with me. With the summer season always flanked by Memorial Day and Labor Day and Independence Day (A.K.A 4th of July) right in the middle, I found it fitting to pay tribute to those that served and are still serving to protect our freedom this week.
This National Monument is also known as the World War II Valor in the Pacific and is the final resting place to 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Open in May 1962, this memorial gives honor in their final resting place; only reachable by ferry from the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center.
An attempt to describe the scene standing over top the sunken battleship’s hull to those that perished December 7th, 1941 is one not done lightly. The names of the deceased are displayed in the wall of the memorial to never be forgotten. I am reminded that every day (not just the summer months), my freedom to hang out with friends, enjoy cookouts, watch parades, ooh and ahh at fireworks and lounge at the pool come at the service of others.
I encourage you to enjoy your summer vacation and if ever given the chance, visit Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii.
