Scrappiness is Happiness

In the quilting world, one can never have too much fabric. There are always patterns to browse and fabrics to sew and quilts to be made so when you have left over fabric scraps (usually bigger than 2″x2″), a quilt can in fact be created. For this scrappy quilt, I choose to use 2 1/2″ squares. The only rule I had for this quilt was try to put a light fabric with a darker fabric; other than that no holds barred.

Being that the cost of fabric has increased in the last several years, it has been my challenge to spend less and make more; more scrappy quilts that is. And know that simply because the fabrics are scraps does not mean these quilts cannot be beautiful. If truth be told, my scrappy quilts are some of my most favorite. I can look at a finished quilt and see all the loved fabrics from other quilts; thus I have all the love in one quilt. Actually, they are one of a kind and there really are no rules.

Leaders & Enders

I also love that using leaders and enders with your scraps, you can have a scrappy quilt in no time all while working on another Quilt project. To learn more about how Leaders & Enders work, read the blog post here.

Cutting Scraps

When working on other quilting projects; I would try to take a few minutes after I finished cutting all the needed pieces and cut up my scraps in assorted sizes. I have bins that are labeled in my sewing room so I could cut my scraps and place in the appropriate bin for another day. Well… today was that day.

I grabbed the bin for the 2 1/2″ squares and started sewing; making a four patch. I just created many four patches and placed back in the bin for yet another day. When I was ready to create a bigger block, I would grab several 4 patch blocks and sew them together. At one point< i thought the quilt could use some white outlines and once I laid it out, I decided where to place the white blocks. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

To keep costs down, I choose to use a fairly new 100% cotton bed sheet. Again, there are no rules, so none were broken in this quilt design. I must say this quilt is total perfection and using {just a fraction of} my scraps makes me happy. This is the perfect picnic quilt blanket for those hot and summer days.
