Visit a Local Quilt Shop:

These local Quilt Shops are not chain stores and are usually family owned. They have a vested interest in helping you find the right fabrics and pattern. A simple search for quilt shops in your area should yield you many results.

Purchase a Beginner Quilt Pattern and Fabrics:

While visiting your local or preferred quilt shop, ask about patterns for beginners. Set yourself up for success. Most patterns will indicate the skill set needed for the particular pattern. In addition, they are very easy to follow instructions and provide all the details for the fabrics needed. As you build your skills, then you can purchase novice patterns. As I mentioned above, Quilt Shops will assist you with this step; you just have to ask.

Take a Quilt Class:

When you visit your local Quilt shop, they most always publish a calendar of their classes for all skill sets in their store or on their website. If you don’t see it, just ask them. Sometimes the cost of the class will include the fabric and pattern needed to get you started. In addition, if a tool is needed, they will be able to assist you. Note: If you are struggling to find a class, YouTube has thousands of video tutorials that you can watch for free.

Join a Local Quilt Guild:

Joining a local guild is probably one of the most important steps to help build your quilting community and increase your quilting skills. You can search online for Guilds in your area. Most cities have several Guilds; find one that is the right fit for you. There are so many advantages of belonging to a Guild. Most meet monthly and have guest quilters speak and share their tips and experiences. Plus the community in the Quilt community is wonderful.

Attend a Quilt Retreat:

These are usually long weekends where you will take all your supplies and work on your quilt. You can sew all weekend until your heart is content with like people. The great thing about attending a retreat, is when you need a little assistance or struggling with a pattern step, there are other quilters with various levels of quilting that are willing to help you.
