With summer just around the corner, I continue the desire to improve my health and lifestyle. Here are five (5) ways to help improve your health and life so that summer is much more enjoyable. As an aging female, it is a struggle to keep up my metabolism. However, keeping an active lifestyle and not being sedentary is not only good for the body, but is great for the mind and soul as well.
Here are five fun ways to keep active …
- Ditch the scale! One thing I have learned through my health journey is to not live by the number on the scale. While, I continue to maintain my healthy weight and BMI, but I do not worry about the ebb and flow of a few pounds here and there. This number can derail your thoughts and keep you from your goals and focus. I’ve learned it is not about the number but rather my feeling.
- Be Active! Exercise! Yep, you heard me right. I have learned that sitting (for long extended periods of time) is considered the new smoking. Stop being sedentary. Get up, clean the bathroom, organize your pantry, do some jumping jacks while waiting on your dinner anything to get your heart rate up and your feet moving. It does a body good to get up and move at least every hour. Try enlisting the help of your athletic watch, or your hoe AI gadget to set reminders.
- Make Good Food Choices! Wow, this was the hardest part for me. It was a tough pill to swallow (Pardon the pun) knowing that my favorite foods were not good for me. It wasn’t like I was never going to eat another cupcake, a brownie, bowl of ice cream or pizza in my life. But I learned it is about choices and moderation. Once in a while, a sweet treat is nice to have but aware of the consequences of my actions and choices. Knowing I might not feel as great as I thought I would eating that cupcake keeps me always choosing better options for me.
- Give up Sugar! Let go of Processed Foods! This goes along with the food choices above but is a little more strict. Let’s face it, sugar is addicting. I decided I could eat more fresh vegetables and healthy greens and leans and didn’t need to add all the extras. If I really wanted the dressing or the sauce, I could go sugar free / low calorie and always, always measure the amount used. Sometimes, we don’t realize we tend to use more than a serving size.
- Make time for Me! No one but me can make me do any of the things I listed above. I decided that everyday is a gift and I will make great choices that keep me moving toward my goal. I enjoy the gym regiment on a regular basis. I look forward to my evening walks with my son. I find flipping through and reading about new quilt patterns make me happy. and when we are happy, we tend to do more for ourselves and make better decisions.
