Since Spring has arrived in Central Ohio; it is nice to have the windows open and let some fresh air in. I love this time of year and the transition of the seasons because it means one thing; I also change up the quilts and coordinating colors in my bedroom to match the season. I love going through my quilts to find that colorful light cheery fabric feel and pattern that will lay across my bed. I decided on this one.
This quilt came in a Kit that was gifted to me for my birthday several years ago so I love to bring it out every Spring as an homage to my birthday month. Besides, it just makes Spring all that more fresh and alive. The kit included everything but the backing so I purchased that separately; using a fabric collection is Sunday Stroll by Bonnie & Camille.
Besides, who doesn’t love a Sunday Stroll; even the fabric line collection announces Springtime. The bright reds and greens against the dark navy background along with the green, red and navy ginghams are incredible. Be still my heart.
I also love Half Square Triangles (known as HSTs) in quilt patterns. Depending on the fabric choice and the layout or direction of the HST block, the quilt design is endless. With this particular kit, the pattern was included so there was no deviating. I love how the smaller HST blocks create a larger HST block square.
Once I completed the quilt top, I decided to add my own personal flair in the quilting pattern. It seemed natural to quilt within each of the four larger HST quadrants. The borders are quilted with a Budding Fern pattern, while the inner borders and sashes are quilted with a Curl Circle with closed spiral. Then each inner block is quilted with the PJ Lancaster Fall Block.
When I purchased the fabric for the backing, I decided to order a little extra so I could make matching pillow cases.
I love the way it turned out!
The quilt finishes at 63″ x 63″ using the fun red stripes for the binding. And man, does this quilt look beautiful on my bed with matching pillow cases. Another reason I love this quilt so much is the award it received. Last year, once the quilt was finished, I decided to enter it into our Ohio State Fair in the Creative Arts Competition.
I was so excited to visit the Ohio State Fair to witness my special birthday quilt hanging amongst other talented quilters artwork of Ohio. It was a wonderful surprise to also see the (1st Place) Blue Ribbon attached to my quilt. I proudly stood next to my quilt for a photograph displaying my first place award. Now I must start thinking about which of my quilts to enter in this year’s State Fair.
Will you going to enter your art work in a State Fair this year?
