My family and I have been to the Lake Erie Shores and Islands numerous times. On our last adventure, we came across this historical marker for the first ship to shore radio broadcast. Located on Put-in-Bay at the Jet Express Landing in Ottawa County, Dr. Lee deForest broadcasted the first ship to shore radio message on July 18th of 1907 from the steam yacht Thelma. This communication provided race results of the Annual lakes Yachting Association. deForest’s creation of the vacuum tube allowed for the rapid development of the radio and eventually television. It was here that the wireless transmission radio broadcasting was born.
