Growing up the city of Worthington Ohio, I never imagined all the great history in this State of Ohio. One simple evening to get ice cream opened my eyes to the great stories of history in my hometown. This Ohio Historical Marker #54-25 Saint John’s Church of Worthington and Adjacent Parts and Church and Graveyard documents incredible history.
In October of 1803, James Kilbourne, a member of the Scioto Company founded Worthington Ohio. In February of 1804, the articles of agreement establishing the St. John’s Church were executed which became the first Episcopal church established in the Northwest Territory. Kilbourne served as the church’s first Deacon. Both the St. John’s church and the graveyard are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The church graveyard was established when Captain Abner Pinney was buried on November 23, 1804. The graveyard also served as the community burial ground in the early nineteenth century where James Kilbourne is buried as well. There are 317 documented burials including five Revolutionary War and seven War of 1812 veterans in this graveyard. A simple evening to enjoy ice cream with the family became appreciation for the men and women who founded and were buried in my hometown city.
