My Favorite Quilt
One of my favorite and fun quilts to create was this 16-patch color themed block. Over several years of creating quilts, I have accumulated a lot of fabric scraps left over from other quilting projects. Of all the quilts, I just love all the colors of the previous used fabrics and couldn’t part with them. I usually will keep anything larger than 2″x 2″.
Scrappiness is happiness Quilts – A creative quilter will never tire of all the fabric scraps from previous quilts. Once I have finished all my quilt fabric cuts, I usually will take a few minutes afterwards to cut the scraps into uniform squares, any where from a 2″ x 2″ or larger and sort by color and size. I have bins under my cutting table that I store all my cut scraps for the day I am ready to create something bigger.
Leaders & Enders:
A Leader is when sewing, you place a piece of scrap fabric under the foot to start the next sewing piece. The idea is that not only does it prevent the thread from bunching up under the fabric, but is also ensures a ¼″ seam from the edge of your sewing piece. An Ender it is a small piece of scrap fabric placed at the end of the sewing piecing to ensure a ¼″ seam to the edge.
TIP: Instead of using a piece of scrap fabric that just gets thrown away why not have squares to sew together that will eventually be a quilt. These can definitely be scraps of fabric from your scrap bins. Once there are enough sewn together a quilt can be created. Before you know it, you will have a second quilt all while working on your priority quilt.
Next Steps
This quilt design was just placing the same color hues together is a 16-patch square. Each of these smaller squares measures 2″x 2″ with a 1/4″ seem allowance. I choose my precut fabric squares and placed similar color hues together, then sewed four across, with four rows for each block. Once I had created all the desired blocks, I laid them in the desired pattern. I decided to add the cornerstone and sashing between each block. This quilt does not involve advance sewing skills and is great for a beginner quilter.
I absolutely LoVe this quilt! I love the colors and the movement, how I was able to use many of my scrap fabrics and that using the leader and ender sewing method, I created a new quilt in no time. This is also a very budget friendly quilt since I already had these fabrics.
